Detailed Instructions for Oven Cleaning and Maintenance

The oven is one of the most essential and integral parts of the kitchen. It is there to offer us warm and delicious meals every day. However, the oven requires regular cleaning and maintenance to maintain its performance and remain clean and hygienic. In this guide, we will present step-by-step cleaning procedures for your oven, as well as maintenance tips so you can enjoy your food without unwanted residues and unpleasant burnt odors.

1. Essential Tools and Materials

Before you begin cleaning the oven, it is important to have the necessary tools and materials at your disposal. You will need:

  • Oven Cleaner: Choose a cleaner suitable for ovens and don't forget to read the instructions regarding use and safety. If you do not want to use a commercial cleaner because you are afraid of chemical transfer to the oven and subsequently your food, you can use one of the alternative eco-friendly cleaners we will suggest later.
  • Gloves: It is important to wear gloves to protect your hands from cleaners and stains.
  • Sponge and Brush: You will need sponges and brushes to remove residues, such as burnt grease, from the oven.
  • Towels and Cloths: Towels and cloths will help you clean and dry individual surfaces and oven components.

2. Cleaning the Interior of the Oven

The oven cleaning process begins from the interior. There are several ovens that feature a self-cleaning program. If your oven has this program, activate it and follow the manufacturer's instructions, then continue from Chapter 3 regarding external cleaning. If your oven does not have such a program, put on your gloves and follow the steps below:

Step 1: Remove racks and accessories

Before starting the cleaning, remove the racks and accessories from the oven. These can be cleaned separately. By removing these components, you will be able to clean the interior of the oven more easily, as well as the accessories themselves.

Step 2: Apply the cleaner

After removing large residues, apply the cleaner to the interior of the oven according to the manufacturer's instructions. Make sure to thoroughly coat the walls, bottom, and ceiling of the oven. Let the cleaner act for the specified time indicated in the instructions.

Step 3: Cleaning accessories and grates

While the cleaner is working, clean the accessories and racks you removed using water and a non-abrasive detergent, such as dish soap. Scrub the components well with a sponge, but be careful not to damage them. To clean the grates even more effectively, you can let them soak for 2-3 hours in a sink with dish soap and scrub persistent grease with a scouring pad. Some accessories may also be dishwasher safe.

Step 4: Removing residues

After the cleaner has acted, use the sponge or brush again where necessary to remove residues from the oven, which will now be much easier to take off. For enameled surfaces, use nylon brushes or sponges with mild soapy water.

Step 5: Rinsing and Drying

Use a damp cloth or a special microfiber towel moistened with a little clean water to carefully rinse the oven.

3. Cleaning the Exterior of the Oven

After cleaning the interior, it's time for the exterior. It is important to clean the outer part for both aesthetic and hygienic reasons.

Step 1: Cleaning the Surfaces

Use a cleaner for the oven and apply it to all external surfaces, such as the door (inside and out), the frame, and the buttons. Pay special attention around the door, as grease accumulation is often observed there. You can either spray directly on the oven or apply it to a sponge and wipe the surfaces.

Step 2: Drying and Polishing

Use a clean cloth to dry and polish the surfaces and remove any cleaner residues which, if not dried, will leave spots on the oven. When you can see the interior of the oven clearly without grease blocking the glass, you can be sure you have cleaned the door well..

4. Alternative - Eco-friendly Ways to Clean the Oven

If you do not want to use a specific commercial cleaner to clean your oven , you can create affordable and ecological cleaners with simple materials found in every household. These solutions clean deeply and with characteristic ease, even the most stubborn stains.

Cleaning the Oven with Lemon

Squeeze three lemons and place their juice in a heatproof bowl, which you will place inside the oven. Then, turn the oven on to 250°C for about 30 minutes. You should allow a few minutes to pass after turning off the oven so it is not scalding hot. The degreasing properties of the lemon will soften the fats, and you will now be able to remove them easily with a cloth.

Cleaning the Oven with Vinegar

Fill a spray bottle with vinegar and spray the interior of the oven, avoiding the heating elements. After adequately spraying every surface of the oven, turn it on at 120°C for 10-15 minutes. Once the oven cools down, wipe it with a cloth to easily remove grease and stains.

Cleaning the Oven with Baking Soda

Naturally, baking soda could not be missing from a cleaning guide. Baking soda will help you clean even the most stubborn stains from your oven. Mix half a cup of baking soda with a few tablespoons of water to create a paste, which you should apply to the interior of the oven when it is cold. If you see that the paste was not enough, create more. You can add a little salt to this paste, which will help in scrubbing the surfaces better. If you add salt, do not apply it to glass surfaces. Also, it is important not to apply the paste to the heating elements. Let the paste act for at least two hours (if possible, leave it for up to 12 hours) and then remove it with a damp cloth or a scraper where necessary. If paste residues remain, spray a little vinegar on them to create a reaction and remove them easily with a cloth. Unlike previous methods, this specific one does not require turning on the oven.

5. Oven Maintenance

In addition to cleaning, oven maintenance is equally important. With proper oven maintenance, you can ensure years of use and healthy cooking. The following tips will help you maintain your oven in excellent condition.

  1. 1. Clean stains immediately: During cooking, splatters may occur, grease may drip, and various other stains may be created. If you clean stains immediately, they will be removed much more easily than if you let them dry.
  2. 2. Wipe the glass after every use: After cooking is finished, let the oven cool slightly and then wipe it with a damp cotton cloth to prevent grease buildup.
  3. 3. Replace the air filter: Most ovens have air filters that need to be replaced regularly. Check your oven manual for replacement frequencies and be sure to change it promptly.
  4. 4. Fan maintenance: If your oven has a fan for air circulation, ensure it is working correctly and without obstructions. If required, clean the fan of dust to prevent problems with the oven's operation.

This guide is also suitable for small ovens (benchtop) or microwaves. With proper cleaning and maintenance, you will ensure your oven is ready for every culinary challenge and will last for many years to come. By following these instructions, you can enjoy flavors without unwanted residues and have an oven that operates in perfect condition.
